The BEGIN project is a collaborative project in 6 countries and 10 municipalities. In this project municipalities aim to make their city more resistant to climate change. In order to do that, conventional infrastructure is replaced by Blue-Green Infrastructures (BGI). These BGI are better suited to deal with extreme weather. To accomplish these structures, cities look for smart ways to collaborate with other stakeholders, such as citizens, private companies and third sector organizations (social innovation). Together with Royal College of Arts (UK) and UNESCO-IHE, the GDS monitors and advices municipalities in their social innovation quests.
The GDS supports the municipalities by identifying potential tools and prototypes that can stimulate social innovation. This identification is based on the academic literature on co-creation and social innovation. Also, tools are derived from best practices in the field of BGI’s.
